Photo Guidelines

Official biometric standards for passport and ID photos.

Different authorities have slightly different rules, but the following guidelines are common across many countries. Use them as a checklist before submitting your photo.

Manual Checklist

  • Recent Photo: Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance.
  • No Filters/AI: Do not use apps or filters to alter your face. Our tool only removes the background.
  • Direct View: Directly face the camera without tilting your head. Full face must be visible.
  • Neutral Expression: Face the camera directly, mouth closed, no smiling (recommended).
  • Even Lighting: Avoid heavy shadows on your face or the background.
  • Have someone else take your photo: Selfies are not allowed for passport photos.
  • Use a plain white or off-white background: No patterns, textures, or objects.
  • Camera distance: Stand 4–5 feet (1.2–1.5m) from the camera for best results.
  • Extra space above head: If using a cropping tool, leave enough room above the head for proper adjustment.

Framing & Measurement

Make sure your face is centered. Do not crop off the top of your head or your chin. Avoid tilting your head too much in any direction.

Background

Our tool replaces backgrounds with a compliant white or off-white color. Ensure you are well-separated from your original background when taking the photo.

Based on U.S. Department of State regulations, here are the critical details usually missed.

Attire & Accessories

  • No Glasses: You must take off eyeglasses. If you cannot remove them for medical reasons, you must include a signed note from your doctor.
  • No Uniforms: Do not wear uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform, or camouflage attire.
  • Jewelry is OK: You can see wear jewelry and facial piercings as long as they do not hide your face.
  • Religious Attire: Head coverings for religious purposes are allowed (requires signed statement) if the face is fully visible.

Important Note on Digital Alterations: Official rules state you cannot use apps or filters to physically alter your facial features (like changing eye color or face shape). Our tool strictly performs compliant background removal and cropping only, preserving your natural biometric data.
